Vancouver, B.C. - Vancouver Canucks Senior Vice-President and General Manager Dave Nonis announced today that defenceman Willie Mitchell has signed a four-year deal. In keeping with club policy, terms of the deal were not disclosed.

"We are excited to have agreed to a long-term deal with Willie today," said Nonis. "Willie is a fierce competitor and is one of the top defensive defenceman in the game today."

Mitchell, 29, played a total of 80 games during the 2005-06 season between two teams, the Dallas Stars (16 GP) and the Minnesota Wild (64 GP). Last season Mitchell recorded 10 points (2-8-10), 133 penalty minutes and a plus 19 rating. Over his six-year NHL career, Mitchell has played a total of 322 games and recorded 61 points (9-52-61). In 23 career playoff games, Mitchell has recorded four points (1-3-4) and 16 penalty minutes.

The 63, 205 lbs, native of Port McNeill, British Columbia was originally drafted by the New Jersey Devils in the 8th round, 199th overall in the 1996 NHL Entry Draft. Mitchell has played for three NHL teams, the New Jersey Devils, the Minnesota Wild and the Dallas Stars.
