Vancouver, B.C. - Vancouver Canucks Senior Vice-President and General Manager Dave Nonis announced today that goaltender Roberto Luongo has signed a four-year deal. In keeping with club policy, terms of the deal were not disclosed.
“We are pleased to have agreed to a long-term deal with Roberto today," said Nonis. "Roberto has proven himself to be an elite goaltender. His international experience, Vezina Trophy nomination and ability to consistently play at the highest level are tremendous assets that we believe will make the Vancouver Canucks competitive each and every night.”
Luongo, 27, played 75 games with the Florida Panthers in the 2005-06 season posting a record of 35-30-9 with a 2.97 GAA and a save percentage of .914. Over his five-year NHL career, Luongo has played a total of 341 games, posting a record of 115-168-41, a 2.72 GAA and a save percentage of .919.
On the international stage, Luongo has represented Canada at the 2006 Winter Olympics, the 2005, 2004 and 2003 World Championships, helped Team Canada capture the 2004 World Cup and won gold at the 2003 World Championships. In the 2003-04 season the backstop was a finalist for the Vezina Trophy and the Lester B. Pearson Award in addition to participating in the NHL All-Star Game and being named to the 2004 NHL Second All-Star Team. Luongo set new NHL records during the 2003-04 season in saves (2,303) and shots against (2,475) with Florida.
