Vancouver, B.C. Vancouver Canucks Senior Vice-President and General Manager Dave Nonis announced today that the Canucks have signed free agent defenceman Sven Butenschon. In keeping with club policy, terms of the deal were not disclosed.

Butenschon, 29, joins the Canucks after spending the 2004-05 season with Mannheim of the German Elite League. In 50 games in 2004-05, Butenschon recorded six points (1-5-6) and 54 penalty minutes. He also played in 14 playoff games, recording one assist.

The 6-foot-4, 215 lbs., native of Itzehoe, Germany, has played for three NHL teams over a seven year career including Pittsburgh, Edmonton and the New York Islanders. In 132 career NHL games, he has recorded 14 points (2-12-14) and 76 penalty minutes. He has also played four NHL Playoff games with the Islanders in 2003-04.

Butenschon who shoots left was originally selected in the third round, 57th overall in the 1994 Entry Draft.
