Vancouver, B.C. - Vancouver Canucks Senior Vice-President and General Manager Dave Nonis announced today that the Canucks have acquired a draft pick in 2006 from the NY Islanders in exchange for defenceman Brent Sopel.
The teams have agreed to the following conditions of the trade: if the Islanders sign Sopel beyond the 2005-06 season, they will give the Canucks a second round pick in the 2006 draft. If they do not sign him, the Islanders will give Vancouver their third round pick instead. "Brent is a quality person and we appreciate everything he did for us in his years with the Canucks," said Dave Nonis. "New York should provide an excellent opportunity for Brent and his family. We wish him luck in the future."
Sopel, 28, played in 80 games for the Canucks last season, recording 42 points (10-32-42) and 36 penalty minutes. The 6’1”, 205 pound defenceman has played in 302 career National Hockey League regular season games, recording 125 points (32-93-125) and 129 penalty minutes.
